| In 1986 I qualified as a manipulative therapist following three years of training with the Northern Institute of Massage and Physical Therapies. The treatment entails a combination of massage, electrotherapy, ultrasound, special gentle stretching techniques, relaxation and exercise is sometimes recommended.
After qualifying I spent a number of years working with the physiotherapist, Mr. S. G. Coxell, in Peterborough, I subsequently worked in conjunction with the sports injury physiotherapist Mr. Ken Willey. During the years since qualifying I have regularly attended professional development courses and seminars, during which I have learned different techniques for releasing muscular problems, The one thing that these techniques have in common is that they are all gentle. A good Example of this is "positional release". Using this approach the painful part of the body is placed in its most comfortable position and is supported there whilst the muscle tension is monitored. After a while the muscle, without any pressure on it, can begin to relax. This is painless but in many cases very effective and is particularly useful in the treatment of elderly patients or those in an acute stage of pain and combines well with other forms of treatment. |
